THE HORIZON EUROPE PROJECTS POLICY ANSWERS AND BEAMING COLLABORATE IN AN EVENT ABOUT OPEN SCIENCE AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY PROTECTION
A two-day event dedicated to open science and intellectual property protection took place on October 24-25, 2024, at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Banja Luka. This event, organized through the Horizon Europe “POLICY ANSWERS” and “BEAMING“ projects, gathered over 40 participants, offering them an invaluable opportunity to deepen their understanding of these essential topics.
The event opened with a panel discussion titled “The Thin Line Between Open Science and Market-Oriented Innovation Protection.” Moderated by Siniša Marčić from the Regional Cooperation Council, the panel featured distinguished experts such as Biljana Kosanović from the University of Belgrade, Vladimir Risojević from the University of Banja Luka, and Neven Tamarut from the University of Rijeka/STEP-RI. Together, they explored the intricate balance between sharing scientific results and protecting intellectual property to stimulate innovation.
Neven Tamarut led a comprehensive training on identifying the potential of scientific results for licensing and patenting versus releasing findings to the wider public. The workshop equipped attendees with the skills to evaluate when intellectual property protection may enhance the impact of their research and when openness aligns best with scientific goals.
On the second day, two hands-on workshops took place. Bojan Ćudić from the Digital Innovation Hub “ONEX” conducted a session on “Commercializing Intellectual Property,” offering insights into transforming research findings into market-ready products. Later, Biljana Kosanović and Milica Ševkušić from the Institute of Technical Sciences of SANU held a practical workshop on “Applying Open Science Principles Across Disciplines,” focusing on open data, open access, and their impact on advancing various scientific fields.
This event significantly contributed to disseminating the BEAMING project, fostering an understanding of open science practices. Participants gained practical insights into balancing open science with commercialization and left with actionable knowledge to drive research transparency, interdisciplinary collaboration, and sustainable innovation.
The partnership between POLICY ANSWERS and BEAMING highlights the value of collaborative efforts in addressing emerging challenges in science policy and supporting the green transition through responsible research and innovation.
